WPM Explained: What Words Per Minute Really Means & How It Is Calculated

In standardized typing measurement, a word is defined as exactly 5 keystrokes (including letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and spaces).

If a typing test used raw dictionary words, typing the sentence 'I saw a cat run in a fog' (8 short words, 23 characters) would unfairly register a much higher score than 'Phenomenological electroencephalography investigates neurobiological complexities' (4 long words, 82 characters).

By standardizing 1 word = 5 characters, typing metrics remain consistent and comparable regardless of the specific passage being typed.

There are two key formulas used in typing evaluations:

1. Gross WPM (Raw Speed): `` Gross WPM = (Total Keystrokes Typed / 5) / Time in Minutes *Example*: If you type 300 characters in 1 minute, your Gross WPM is 300 / 5 / 1 = 60 WPM`.

2. Net WPM (Accuracy-Adjusted Speed): `` Net WPM = Gross WPM - (Uncorrected Errors / Time in Minutes) *Example*: If you typed 60 Gross WPM in 1 minute but left 4 uncorrected errors, your Net WPM is 60 - 4 = 56 WPM`.

CPM stands for Characters Per Minute (or Keystrokes Per Minute). It simply measures the raw number of keys pressed per minute without dividing by 5.

• To convert CPM to WPM: Divide CPM by 5 (e.g., 300 CPM = 60 WPM).
• To convert WPM to CPM: Multiply WPM by 5 (e.g., 70 WPM = 350 CPM).
